Maryland Day Events
Many events are planned to celebrate Maryland Day on Saturday and Sunday, March 23 and 24th. Indoor activities for Saturday include a Black-eyed Susan craft at Discoveries: The Library at the Mall and a free Family Drop-in Day at the Banneker Douglas Museum. Another option is Otter Day at the Calvert Marine Museum. Check the link here for more ideas and information.
Go Fossil Hunting
Mike Ellwood, the president of the Calvert Marine Museum Fossil Club explains that our area is a hotbed of fossils because it was completely under water between 10 and 16 million years ago. A wide variety of animals died and sank to the bottom of the sea, fossilizing over time. As time passed, the sea receded and exposed cliffs that continue to reveal fossils today.
Purse Park in Nanjemoy, is a great place for beginners. The beach is small but the shark’s teeth are usually plentiful. https://wordpress-938214-4066445.cloudwaysapps.com/fossil-hunting-at-purse-park-and-mallows-bay/
Calvert Cliffs is Maryland’s Granddaddy of fossil hunting. The trail to the lovely beach is 1.8 miles long, one way, so be prepared, but diligent hunters have found some impressive fossils there.

Whizzing down a water slide, drifting on a lazy river, and getting splashed under tipping buckets of water may not sound like an option in Maryland in the early spring, but it is. If your family is suffering from cabin fever, one of these five swim centers just might have the cure.

Visit one of Maryland’s Eclectic Museums
Spring days are perfect for museum adventures. Most Marylanders are familiar with the state’s big, famous museums, such as Baltimore’s National Aquarium and the B&O Railroad Museum, and these museums deserve their excellent reviews. For your next museum jaunt, however, why not choose a destination that focuses on an offbeat subject or offers an uncommon approach to a familiar topic?

Patuxent Research Refuge, South Tract
Combine a visit to a nature center with a hike through the woods and around a big pond at Patuxent Research Refuge. It is the largest science and environmental education center in the Department of the Interior. Even gamers will be mesmerized by the whooping crane exhibit in the Visitor Center which has animated cranes that mimic the moves visitors make when standing in front of the screen. Gigantic binoculars mounted on decks behind the Visitor Center provide views of seasonal birds that are using the wetlands for a temporary home.
