Since the early 1980s, farmers’ markets in the region have taken off. As the mantra to “Eat local” has become lodged in our collective conscience, farmers’ markets have grown in both numbers and popularity. These islands of fresh from the farm goodness offer everything from baked goods, fresh fruits and vegetables, herbs, and meats to locally made pottery, candles, and other crafts.
We’ve compiled a list of many of the farmers markets in our area, but the Maryland Office of Tourism offers a complete list of markets statewide if you are traveling and looking beyond our local community. If you wish to support local family farms, farmers’ market and sustainably grown food sources, localharvest.org offers a search so you can link to restaurants featuring organically grown food and farms offering CSAs (community supported agriculture). Search by zip code, city or state.
As always, it’s a good idea to check a market’s website or call before heading out to see if normal operating hours have changed or if there are other restrictions.
