St. Mary’s is Great for Family Outings
Welcome to St. Mary’s County, Maryland! This Chesapeake Bay destination is brimming with history, outdoor fun, vibrant culture — and passionate people eager to share it all with you. St. Mary’s is just a short drive from Washington, D.C., Annapolis and Baltimore and makes a great family outing.
Kids and families enjoy exploring the Patuxent River Naval Air Museum’s outdoor flight line and soaring aloft in the Mach 5 virtual flight trainers. And, back on earth, there’s 53 pristine acres of natural wildlife habitat to explore via canoe or kayak. McIntosh Run is an easy paddle along the edge of historic Leonardtown with Patuxent River Outfitters on-site to provide everything you need. Great family lunch spots in Leonardtown include Big Larry’s Comics & Café and Kevin’s Corner Kafe.
St. Mary’s is where Maryland began. Historic St. Mary’s City is an outdoor living history museum on the site of Maryland’s first capital. Kids can get up-close to heirloom livestock at the City’s Godiah Spray Plantation, and close to each other in the lower deck of the Maryland Dove, a ship similar to what Maryland’s first colonists journeyed in. Costumed interpreters and hands-on activities make the 17th century colony come alive.
