In 2004 a group of volunteers headed out to clean up a local stream. Since then it’s become an annual April event with thousands of people participating to pick up trash in area streams, creeks, rivers and parks. Project Clean Stream, hosted by the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay, brings together residents, local businesses, environmental organizations, local governments, community groups, houses of worship, schools and universities. Any group can organize and host a Project Clean Stream event.
Through Project Clean Stream cleanups, volunteers have the opportunity to pick up trash in their communities, discover how their everyday decisions affect the overall health of their local waterways, and ultimately foster a healthier and more sustainable relationship with the Chesapeake. Kids can see what happens when trash isn’t properly disposed of, or they don’t remember to pick up sporting equipment and balls.
