Students at Arundel High School are actively working toward addressing racial justice in Anne Arundel County. Along with Principal Gina Davenport, students formed Our Anne Arundel, a book study group to read books about racial inequity, racial justice and activism. The group of about 60 students, as well as Davenport, began with “Stamped: Racism, Antiracism, and You” by Jason Reynolds and Ibram X. Kendi, and has grown exponentially.
We spoke to Gina Davenport, along with student leaders Bunmi Omisore and Eddy Awe, and Dr. Jasmine Coleman, the Equity Leadership Council’s co-facilator, to hear more about their initiatives, how the group is growing, and how the students and faculty are working together to make positive changes in the community.
Podcast Version:
Now, Davenport says, the group is planning a community-wide event with the book that is being supported by the Anne Arundel Public Library, Kindness Grows Here, and the all the secondary principals of the Arundel, Crofton, and South River clusters.
