On this week’s Third Floor Views, we spoke to Imani Black, founder of Minorities in Aquaculture to hear about her journey as an oyster woman, what life on the water is like as a woman, and sustainability in aquaculture.
She comes from a family of watermen on Maryland’s Eastern Shore that dates over 200 years. Black graduated from Old Dominion University with a degree in Marine Biology degree. She was also a Division 1 lacrosse player. Black is an African American oyster farmer building a career in the rapidly growing aquaculture industry. She was born and raised on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and her love for conservation and restoration on the Chesapeake Bay started at a young age.
