Meet Cameron! Last Fall, at the age of 7, he wrote a story for the AACPS “Young Authors Contest” and won 1st place earning him a spot in the Maryland statewide contest. He wrote about his older sister, Ellie who happens to have Down Syndrome. When contemplating his story he considered writing about being in a military family who has moved several times, being adopted, or having a sister with a disability. He promptly decided he would be an advocate for his sister and wrote all about Ellie, and how awesome she makes his life. Check out Cameron’s story he wrote below.
We got to ask Cameron a few questions to find out more about him and his cool sister Ellie, see his answers below.
Q: Where are you from?
A: I am from Severna Park, Maryland
Q: How does it feel to be the winner of the AACPS contest? DId you do anything to celebrate?
A: It feels awesome that I won. We are waiting to see if there is a virtual celebration.
Q: Why did you decide to write your essay about your sister?
A: I wanted to write a story about having a sister Down syndrome because I want them to know how awesome it is.
Q: What is your favorite thing to do with Ellie?
A: My favorite thing to do is to play with her at the park.
Q: What is your favorite thing about Ellie?
A: My favorite thing about Ellie is that she is kind and creative.
Q: What advice would you give another kid if they saw someone bullying someone because they have a disability ?
A: I would say to back off, it isn’t nice to bully and everybody deserves respect.
Q: Do you plan on writing more stories? What will it be about?
A: I think my next story will be about a super hero team called the “Animal Guardians.”
Q: What other hobbies do you have besides being an awesome writer and bro?
A: My hobbies include studying dinosaurs, playing sports, drawing, playing with my friends, and reading.
Q: What is your favorite place in Maryland to go have some fun?
A: My favorite place to go in Maryland is Ocean City.
Q: What are four things your friends would say you are really good at?
A: 4 things my friends would say I’m really good at are sports, running, swimming, and biking.
Q: What are your plans and goals for the future?
A: My goals for the future are to find out how people with disabilities can be more included. I’d also like to be an archeologist when I grow up.
Q: If you could meet one famous person, who would it be and why?
A: One famous person I would like to meet is Patrick Mahomes because he is on a national football team which is really cool – I love football.
Q: Where is your favorite place to eat or your favorite meal at home?
A: My favorite meal at home is a meatball sub.
Q: What is your favorite thing to do with your family?
A: My favorite thing to do is to go on vacation.
Q: Out of all the places you have lived which one is your favorite and what is your favorite thing about Maryland?
A: We’re a military family and we used to live in Virginia Beach. My favorite place I’ve lived is Maryland and my favorite thing about it is that I love to kayak in the Magothy.
