Yikes, it’s January already. Every year the fall just flies by, and before I know it, it’s January and cold, and the days are short. And yep, I get grumpy. My daughter and I were just discussing the gloomy Maryland winters. But here’s the thing: it doesn’t last long and isn’t that terrible. Especially if you go and do something.
Climb out from under your blanket, get dressed in layers, and go have some fun. Even though you might have earmuffs on, it will be good to feel the sun on your face. Go ice skating and then have some hot chocolate. Take a walk. Our state and county parks have some beautiful trails and beaches. The picture above was taken on a Saturday in December at Beverly Triton Nature Park. It was a beautiful, if chilly day. We saw a pair of eagles, a blue heron, some bufflehead, and only 2 other groups of people out walking.
There are some great playgrounds to explore in the winter.
Kinder Farm Park in Millersville has farm animals to watch and a very fun playground. Robinson Nature Center, Columbia, has a little bit of everything. Trails to explore, a beautiful nature playspace that includes wooden structures to climb over, logs to climb in, tree swings and an outdoor kitchen should keep kids busy for a while.
So if you see me and I’m grumpy please tell me to go take a walk. I’ll be better by March. -Donna Jefferson, Publisher
