Are you concerned because you know your child is smart but he or she struggles in school? You might experience the homework battle every night, yet your child’s teacher says everything is fine. Parents should always listen to their intuition. No one knows your child like you do.
Children who are bright can still struggle in school if they have a learning difference and learn and process information in a different way. Having a learning difference, such as dyslexia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia, or executive function difficulties, does not mean that a child is not smart or cannot achieve. It means they learn differently. In order to reach their full academic potential, students with learning differences need instruction tailored to their learning profile.
Without appropriate instruction, students with learning differences might become frustrated and lose confidence despite their best efforts. For some children this can result in social, behavioral, and/or emotional challenges where their teachers might describe them as cautious learners, or even defiant or unmotivated.
If this sounds familiar, The Summit School and the Summit Resource Center might be able to help.
The first step is identifying if your child has a learning difference. A comprehensive evaluation will give you the answers you need to find the right academic program for your child. Contact the Summit Resource Center at 410-798-0005 or src@thesummitschool.org.
If your child is diagnosed with a learning difference, consider a school program specifically designed for students with learning differences. The Summit School’s program is designed for students who:
- are encountering difficulty with reading, writing, spelling, math, organization or self-management
- are bright and want to learn but are falling behind
- thrive when teachers listen and adapt to individual needs
- are most successful when learning is active and expectations reflect their learning profile
- demonstrate weaknesses in language processing, working memory, comprehension or organization
Changing schools is a difficult decision. When parents make the decision to send their child to Summit, they report a sense of relief beyond what was expected. Not only is their child learning at an improved rate, but their child is happier and their home life is better.
