Salt dough ornaments are a great holiday craft for kids. They can be simple or decorative, whatever you prefer. Make them for your own tree or give them to loved ones as a gift.
Here’s how to make them.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup flour
- ½ cup salt
- ½ cup water (or more as needed)
- paint
- string or ribbon
- glitter and other decorative items
- varnish
Preheat oven to 250F. Mix flour and salt in a bowl and slowly add the water. Mix thoroughly. Add more flour if mixture is extra sticky.
Knead dough on floured parchment paper until soft and pliable. Roll out dough with a lightly floured rolling pin. Use cookie cutters for the shapes (a great set of plastic holiday cookie cutters can be found at the Dollar Store).
Place shapes on an ungreased cookie sheet. Using a straw or chopstick, poke a hole for the ribbon that will hang the ornament. Bake in the oven for 2 or 3 hours, flipping once or twice, until fully dry. Remove from oven and allow to cool completely.
Decorate as desired and string with ribbon to complete the look. Don’t forget to write the name and date on the back – makes a great memory for years to come!
Optional: You can use several coats of non-toxic acrylic varnish to seal the ornaments so that they last several years (it prevents moisture from getting in).
