Father’s Day gifts can be tough. Kids are no longer in school and there’s no hope for the school-made fancy crafts that come home for Mother’s Day. That usually leaves the onus on mom to come up with something cool for Father’s Day.
Here are several easy craft ideas from our staff that make a big hit on Father’s Day.
Grill Platter for Dad
Our daddy loves to grill, so we knew the perfect gift was a platter for all of his delicious food!
Items needed:
- White oven safe ceramic platter (available at any store with kitchen supplies)
- Ceramic paint
- Ceramic paint pen
- Small artist brush
- Hands of two or more little ones
What to do:
Preheat oven to 300 degrees. Wash and dry the platter. Paint little hands yellow and orange and place hands on the platter, in alternating directions, to resemble a lion’s mane. Using ceramic paint pen, draw eyes and mouth on the lion. Also use ceramic pen to write desired wording on the platter. We wrote, “Daddy is King of the Grill.”
Flip over and date with the year, and have children write their names.
Bake in oven for 35 minutes, and your gift is ready to use!

Handprint TieHandprint Tie
We made my husband a handprint tie for Father’s Day in 2002 when my twins were 1 and my oldest was 2 and he still wears it to this day!
Items needed:
- A solid color tie
- Fabric paint
What to do:
Pour enough paint on a paper plate to cover your child’s hand. Carefully press his or her hand in the paint and then on a piece of paper. Practice a couple of times so the child understands what to do. Once kids get it, dip their hand in the paint and then onto the tie. Make a print for each child. Then let it dry.

Customized Grill Kit
My husband loves to celebrate the summer grilling. My son came up with the idea of making him a grill kit. We got most of the items from the dollar store and a few items from the grocery store. It was a big hit. He used everything in it.
Items needed:
A metal bucket, oven mitt, canning jars, barbecue brushes, ingredients for the barbecue rub and some barbecue sauce.
What to do:
My son put his handprints on the oven mitt with fabric paint and I painted:
“Hands down, you’re the best dad.”
We put together the bucket with the personalized oven mitt, homemade rub, sauce and brushes.
Homemade Barbecue Rub:
1 cup chili powder
3 tablespoons paprika
3 tablespoons finely chopped fresh thyme
2 tablespoons coarse salt
2 tablespoons garlic powder
1 tablespoon freshly ground black pepper
2 teaspoons ground cumin
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
Place all ingredients in a large bowl; whisk to combine. We sealed ours in a mason jar and made a label for the front.
