Campgrounds suitable for good stargazing must be far away from big light sources like cities. The designation of Dark Sky Parks offers visitors an exciting opportunity to study the night sky in an environment with minimal light pollution. Certified Dark Sky Parks must use quality outdoor lighting, have effective pollution reduction policies, and have ongoing stewardship practices.
The International Dark Sky Places (IDSP) program “certifies communities, parks, and protected areas around the world that preserve and protect dark sites through responsible lighting policies and public education.” The DSP places are by far the best places for stargazing.
IDSP designated parks in the Northeastern U.S. include:
- AMC Maine Woods, ME
- Cape Lookout National Seashore, NC
- Cherry Springs State Park, PA
- Katadhin Woods and Waters National Monument, ME
- Mayland Earth to Sky Park & Bare Dark Sky Observatory, NC
The following parks close to the DMV, while not necessarily designated as IDSP, are recommended for stargazing.
Campgrounds For Stargazing
Hands down, our experts recommended Cherry Springs as the best place for stargazing.
Cherry Springs State Park, Coudersport, PA

There is plenty to do at Assateague other than stargazing. The ponies wander through sand dunes, wading through ocean waters, biking and hiking. There are ocean side drive-in and walk-in camp sites, bayside drive-in and even a section for horse camping. Reservations are accepted for some sites, otherwise it is first-come, first-serve. Sites have a picnic table and a fire ring, chemical toilets and cold showers are available.

Big Meadows Campground in Shenandoah National Park, VA
Big Meadows in the Shenandoah Mountains is a wide open space far from the lights of Washington, D.C., which makes it a good place for stargazing. Picnic areas are provided, as well as conveniences like flush toilets, showers, and a dump station, which creates a comfortable camping experience.
